So, this article, from Medscape states that the Mediterranean and DASH diets top the charts for the best diets in 2017. If you have ever been to my office, you have probably heard me say that the Mediterranean diet is probably a good diet to follow IF you are of Mediterranean decent. If you are not, it might not be the optimal diet for you. How do you think an Inuit or someone of Asian descent would do with this diet? Do their bodies’ genetics even recognize some of the foods or could they cause a reaction, immune/inflammatory or otherwise. Is the Mediterranean or DASH diet better than what 80 or even 90 percent of American now eat in our SAD diet? Probably. That is why people lose weight and improve their cholesterol, sugar and blood pressure numbers. But if you want to eat optimally for you, look no further than what your grandparents or great grandparents ate. If you are of European decent, you probably will not have much of a problem with dairy. In fact, you probably need it. If your ancestors resided in a very cold climate, you probably will do well with more fat in your diet. Overall, everyone would do better with less (or no) sugar in their diets along with fewer simple carbohydrates and processed foods. I think that is why people do well on some of these diets. At a minimum, they eliminate many of the foods that are outright harmful which is a good start. But if you want to eat optimally, for your body, look no further than your heritage!
