If a constant state of fatigue has become your ‘new normal’, acupuncture can help.

Adrenal glands, also known as suprarenal glands, are small, triangular-shaped glands located on top of both kidneys. Adrenal glands produce hormones that help regulate your metabolism, immune system, blood pressure, response to stress and other essential functions. When the adrenal glands are not functioning properly, your body feels as if it is in a perpetual state of tired. And this feeling of tiredness starts to feel ‘normal’, but it is not. If the feeling of ‘dragging yourself through the day” becomes a regular pattern, you may be experiencing adrenal fatigue.

Some important questions to consider concerning adrenal fatigue:

  • Is it becoming harder and harder for you to get out of bed in the morning?
  • Are you finding that your level of fatigue has reached a whole new level?
  • Are sugar and caffeine the only way to get you through the day, especially in the late afternoon?
  • Have you been to your primary care physician and told that everything is normal, yet you don’t feel normal?

People experiencing adrenal fatigue often have to use caffeinated coffee, colas, sugar, or sugary sweet foods to prop themselves up in the morning or to even get through the day. Unnecessary weight gain, hypothyroidism, food cravings, low blood pressure, feelings of cold and an overall lack of sex drive are many health conditions that can be seen coupled with or masking underlying adrenal fatigue.

What Causes Adrenal Fatigue?

Adrenal fatigue is caused by your adrenal glands not being able to produce enough hormones that are needed in order for the body to cope with stress or everyday life. Think of it as a car with no gas in the tank trying to go 100 miles per hour. Overstimulation of your adrenals, thyroid, and other organs over time can be caused either by a very intense single stressor, or by chronic or repeated stresses that have a cumulative effect on the physiological functioning of the body. When you have an emotional crisis such a break-up, death of a loved one, major surgery or trauma, or any type of severe repeated or constant stress in your life, your adrenals have to respond to the stress and maintain homeostasis.

Why haven’t I heard of Adrenal Fatigue before?

Although adrenal fatigue affects millions of people, conventional medicine does not yet recognize it as a distinct syndrome. However, it is important to consult your primary care physician to rule out any possible factors that can be causing prolonged fatigue. Once that is ruled out, natural remedies including Chinese medicine and acupuncture can help.

Over the course of several sessions, acupuncture rejuvenates the body by activating the parasympathetic nervous system response. You will begin to feel deeply relaxed and begin to restore energy. Chinese herbal medicine and food dietetics are also used to correct any underlying deficiencies that have been exhausting the body over time.
