Sleep, Poop, Smile, Love

Um, wait a second, what was that second one? Poop, yep, poop. And what exactly does that have to do (couldn’t resist) with the other two? Well chances are, if you are sleeping well, pooping well, smiling and loving well, you are ahead of the game and probably feeling pretty good. Let’s take these one at a time. Sleep is probably the single most important thing for your health and well-being. Your body repairs itself when you sleep, your immune system is rebuilt after a day of fighting off billions of bacteria and viruses. You consolidate memories and prepare for a new day of using your brain for everything from getting the kids to school to simply getting through your day. Everyone knows what it feels like to get a lousy night’s sleep, but what if you are missing out on 10-30% of the sleep that you need. Sure, you can function, but what is not getting rebuilt as the body prioritizes, what is the cumulative effect? Poop is pretty easy. If you are pooping well, chances are you are eating well and that other things like stress are not unduly affecting you and your digestion. Smile? Smiling and being happy/content can affect your health in the most profound ways. Along with loving (your friends, your dog, your kids, your spouse, your life!) mood can have a physical impact on your body. Depression is linked with so many chronic diseases, and it is no surprise that those who are happy and connected are the healthiest individuals and live the longest lives.

If you are not doing one or even all these things well, seek help. Acupuncture is one way to improve everything from your digestion, to you sleep and even your mood. At Princeton Acupuncture & Oriental Medicine, we specialize in pain relief and pain can affect any of these issues. We find that when we can alleviate pain and help patients manage stress, they start to sleep a little better, poop a little better, smile a little more and have room for a little more love in their lives.
