What is Really Important (part 2)

So we did a neat little exercise last week to see what was really important to you. Many will say “So what, even if what I’m doing is not exactly fulfilling or in line with what is most important to me, I’m stuck doing what I’m doing.”  This is a limiting thought that will keep you in a cycle of unhappiness and discontent.  It may be scary to contemplate or implement a really big change, especially if you are juggling family and finances already.  It may take a long time to implement this kind of change.  You (and your family) may have to make sacrifices, in terms of time and even lifestyle to make it happen.  BUT, it is possible, you just have to know that it is possible, see a way to get there and take the first step.  I sold a successful business that I was making a great living at and signed up to go back to school…for five years!  At the end, I started a brand new business from scratch, again!  All while getting married, moving to a new area and having twins!  Now I have a career that excites me, I look forward to going to work and helping people, I teach students how to do something that I love and I have that wonderful family to boot!

Doing what is truly fulfilling to you feels easy and fun.  Do you remember waking up when you were a kid and doing exactly what you wanted to do?  You were alive!  You had energy and passion!  That feeling is still there.  Being unfulfilled and unhappy, you have no energy, you need a cup or three of coffee to get going and a drink or two at night to wind down.  Getting to the weekend feels like you just completed a marathon, only to go schlepping off to all of those obligations and errands that never seem to get done over the weekend.  Listen, you only have one shot at this life (maybe you have another when you come back, depending on what you believe).  If you are not happy doing what you are doing, you can certainly continue on that path, but how will you feel when you are getting in to your 70’s or 80’s?  Will you look back with regret?  Will you wonder what could have been?  Can you imagine looking back at that pivotal moment when you decided to make a change and let that fulfillment that is just sitting there waiting, back in to your life?  How satisfied and good will you feel looking back on a life well lived?
