Tired of the burning, the pain, the numbness? Tired of curtailing your activities and altering your lifestyle? Tired of medicines and other therapies that don’t work? Ready for relief? Ready for recovery? We understand your problem and have highly effective treatments for neuropathy. Acupuncture is often a medicine of last resort but is also often the best solution.

What is Neuropathy?

Neuropathy is an umbrella term for nerve diseases that affect nerves, most often in the legs and feet that cause a portion of the nerve to deteriorate and die off. This process causes burning and painful sensations that can be followed by numbness in the affected area. Pain and burning can affect peoples day to day life and enjoyment of activities. The numbness can be dangerous as you may not even feel an injury and can also result in the loss of balance and coordination.

Causes of Neuropathy

  • Type 2 diabetes is a major cause for neuropathy. When blood sugar levels are too high for too long it can damage the peripheral (further from the spine) nerves
  • Excessive intake of alcohol can damage nerves
  • Vitamin and nutrient deficiencies such as copper, B vitamins and vitamin E can contribute to nerve damage
  • Autoimmune and inflammatory conditions can cause neuropathy
  • Certain medications and toxins
  • Genetic or inherited conditions
  • Infections
  • Trauma and surgery
  • Idiopathic neuropathy or for unknown reasons

If you are experiencing any of the symptoms of neuropathy, your doctor can run tests to confirm the diagnosis. Unfortunately, for many, the treatments that are available do not always provide relief and once these therapies are exhausted, it becomes a battle to just manage symptoms.

How Acupuncture Can Help

By inserting needles in specific points on the body, the acupuncturist can elicit a response from the body to stimulate blood flow and engage the bodies natural healing response to help repair damaged nerves. Often times, the treatment is so effective, patients will complain because when the feeling starts coming back, it comes back as pain! Remember, the pain and burning come before the numbness and this is a sign that the process is reversing itself. At Princeton Acupuncture & Oriental Medicine, we utilize state of the art electro stimulation devices to further enhance the treatment and dramatically improve the healing process.
