Acupuncture and Knee Pain

The knee is an incredibly complex structure facilitating a wide range of activities, allowing us tremendous flexibility in motion, all while bearing the weight of almost our entire body, every day. It is no wonder that knee pain is so prevalent in patients that we see. From runners and athletes who put a huge amount of strain on this joint, to people dealing with arthritis, and those whose knees are “tricky” or give them trouble after being on their feet for extended periods, knee pain can be bothersome to debilitating. Typically, people will take anti-inflammatory medications, use ice, massage, physical therapy and restrict their movements or exercise to deal with the pain. Except for physical therapy however, none of these will help you heal. Acupuncture will.

The studies in this article Acupuncture and Knee Pain Click show that acupuncture is effective and often more effective than other therapies in treating knee pain. For the majority of cases, what we find to be most effective is taking a break from all activities that put stress on the knee for 4-6 weeks while we help the knee heal. This is often the most difficult part for some people. Athletes hate to stop training and some peoples work requires them to be on their feet. Braces can help and what I tell athletes is if you want to deal with the problem on an ongoing basis then by all means keep doing what you are doing, but if you want to really heal, and eventually get back and even surpass your performance level, you must let the joint heal. Proper strengthening of the joint comes next and then stretching. Supplements can also help depending on your situation. Weight loss can also be a key component of helping knee pain heal and we can help our patients reach their goals with acupuncture and tailored dietary advice.
