Acupuncture and Sciatic Pain

Sciatic pain can be a real pain in the, well, butt! Anyone who has experienced this annoying, uncomfortable and even debilitating pain is familiar with the pain in the back extending down the buttocks, in to the leg and even as far as the foot and toe. This is different from “simple” back pain and can be experienced differently by different people. Some people will not even have back pain (although this is where sciatic pain stems from). Others will have back and buttock pain. Some will have pain that “skips”. There is pain in the buttocks then the knee, then the foot with no pain symptoms in between. Severity obviously differs as well. For some, it can be a minor annoyance that crops up now and then. For others, it can affect their day to day lives causing days of lost work, an inability to perform day to day tasks along with an inability to enjoy their lives on a day to day basis. The good news is that acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine can help with these situations.

One of the studies in this article Acupuncture Relieves Sciatica, Reduces Inflammation indicates that acupuncture combined with Chinese herbal medicine showed “…significant reductions in pain, increases in functionality, and reductions in inflammatory responses for sciatica patients.” As I have said in past articles, this indicates that not only is there a reduction in pain but that the body is healing itself, giving patients lasting relief rather than a band aid. As with any pain syndrome, there can be many factors contributing to sciatic pain. Injury, posture, lifestyle, weight and stress are just a few. The fabulous thing about acupuncture is that we can address any or even all of these factors at the same time! In this way, we can provide our patients with fast, effective and lasting relief.

So you don’t have to deal with your pain in the butt any longer…well, let’s put it this way, we can help you if you experience sciatic pain! Call today for a consultation or book an appointment online and let’s put this problem “behind” you!
