ACUPUNCTURE STANDS WEIGHT LOSS ON ITS EAR!

So I recently did a post on acupuncture and weight loss, Acupuncture & Weight Loss. As I was writing it, I remembered that normally I have a few patients who come in and ask about acupuncture for weight loss. They specifically ask about ear acupuncture for weight loss. One of the studies that I quoted in that post showed a 6.1% reduction in BMI while those who received “sham” acupuncture showed no reduction at all. In this study, cited by Dr. Oz, patients received only ear acupuncture (insertion of acupuncture needles in to specific locations in the ear that correspond to certain organ systems). These are pretty good results for just five needles inserted in the ear once or twice a week over ten weeks, but I aim to do better, much better for my patients!

If you have been following along, you know that acupuncture is not a “one size fits all” medicine. In fact, I tell many of my patients, that I can have ten different people come in complaining of headaches and treat them all differently and effectively! Conversely, if I treated all of them the same way, some may get better but chances are fewer would get better than if I treated them all as individuals, with individual problems, needs and contributing factors. There can be many things that contribute to headaches, so each piece of the puzzle has to be teased out and addressed for the symptoms to get better. The same is true of weight loss. One person may have stress as a major component of their weight gain. Another may have a metabolism issue. Another may have emotions driving their weight gain. The list goes on and on AND people often have several of these factors happening at the same time and even potentiating one another! So let me ask you, do you think that you will see better results with a one size fits all, five needle ear treatment, or a treatment that addresses your individual needs and unique circumstances?

At Princeton Acupuncture & Oriental Medicine, we will perform the comprehensive intake and evaluation that you need in order to properly diagnose the problem and tailor a treatment plan to get the best results possible. On top of this, we will recommend dietary and lifestyle changes that work synergistically with the acupuncture treatments and just as importantly, changes you can live with!

    1. Thanks! Many people saw the piece on Dr. Oz and come in asking about it, figured I would give it some thought and a quick write up!
